From Roman Baths to the Contemporary SPA: Wellness Has Always Been a Journey
12 August 2026
At Nadira, we are advocates and builders of well-being. That is why we observe, study, and draw inspiration from places around the world that have transformed wellness into true masterpieces.
There are hotels immersed in nature. And then there are properties where nature becomes an integral part of the wellness project itself.
This is the case with Silky Oaks Lodge, located in Northern Queensland, on the banks of the Mossman River and adjacent to the Daintree Rainforest.
Here, the SPA is not a space separated from the landscape. It is an environment open to the sounds of the river, the tropical foliage, the light filtered through the trees, and the scents of the forest.
Water as the identity of the project
The wellness center is named the Healing Waters Spa. The name summarizes the core concept: water is not merely used in treatments, but serves as the common thread running through the entire experience.
The treatment rooms overlook the rainforest and the river. Rituals incorporate essences, clays, and ingredients tied to the Australian land. Even the path leading to the SPA keeps the guest connected to the natural environment.
There is no attempt to artificially recreate nature through decor or recorded sounds. Nature is genuinely present.
The strength of the project lies not in having built a SPA in the forest, but in having turned the forest into a part of the SPA.
Well-being continues beyond the treatment
At Silky Oaks Lodge, wellness does not end when the guest leaves the treatment room.
Yoga, walks, river experiences, swimming, and moments of rest on private terraces create a continuous journey between movement, water, silence, and recovery.
The SPA is therefore not an added amenity to the hotel; it is a core component of its identity.
Every element tells the same story:
- the architecture engages in a dialogue with the vegetation;
- the water mirrors the river;
- the treatments originate from the local land;
- silence becomes part of the experience;
- the spaces bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor environments.
The lesson for boutique hotels, relais, and masserias
An Italian property does not need to replicate the Australian rainforest. It needs to understand the approach.
Even a micro-SPA can create an authentic relationship with its surroundings: a sauna overlooking the garden, a hydromassage tub inside a stone courtyard, a relaxation area under the olive trees, or a ritual crafted around Mediterranean scents.
The goal is not to pack in as many facilities as possible. It is to create a coherent sequence: heat, water, connection with the outdoors, silence, and rest.
In this way, the sauna, steam room, shower, and hydromassage tub cease to be separate products and instead become a recognizable, communicable, and marketable experience.
Not a SPA with a view of nature
The Silky Oaks Lodge case study poses an important question for every hospitality property: Which element of our local surroundings can truly become part of the wellness experience?
Light, stone, wind, vegetation, scents, and landscape can become as much a part of the design as the technology used. Because the most memorable well-being does not always stem from vast spaces or spectacular equipment.
It stems from consistency between place, architecture, and sensory experience.
